A nine-year-old Navajo girl is abducted in the middle of the night.
CASE DETAILS  Was it Anthonette whose call was recorded? Gallup, New Mexico, lies within what was once the territory of the Navajo Indian nation. On April 6, 1986, this quiet community of 18,000 was rocked by the mysterious disappearance of a nine-year-old Navajo girl named Anthonette Cayedito. When her mother, Penny, awoke that morning, she was surprised to find that Anthonette was not in the house:
 She left a note for the waitress The police and Penny’s neighbors searched the surrounding foothills but found no trace of the little girl. Authorities were almost certain she had been kidnapped. The days stretched into weeks, then months. Police could offer little to bolster Penny’s hopes of ever finding her daughter alive. Finally, after a year had passed and all seemed lost, a dramatic call for help came into the Gallup Police Station. The voice claimed to be Anthonette Cayedito and the dispatcher asked her where she was. But before the girl could answer, the call was abruptly ended by an unidentified man. Detectives played a recording of the call for Penny Cayedito:
 Her sister remembered the abduction The phone call renewed hope for Anthonette’s safe return. However, four tortuous years passed without any further clues. The FBI released two computer-enhanced photographs showing what Anthonette might look like at the age of 14. Four months later, according to Agent Kevin Miles of the FBI, a possible sighting of Anthonette was reported in Carson City, Nevada:
 Neighbors helped search for Anthonette Shortly after the Carson City sighting, Penny turned to her own Native American heritage in the search for Anthonette. She and her other daughters visited a respected Navajo medicine woman skilled in performing traditional tribal ceremonies. The medicine woman performed the Crystal Ritual, which is said to make contact with the spirit of a missing person. According to the medicine woman, Anthonette was still alive and may have a child. She was being held against her will by threats of violence, somewhere in the Southwest. Penny was amazed that the information provided by the medicine woman was consistent with elements of the detective’s investigation:
Anthonette Cayedito was nine-years-old when she disappeared. Today, she would be in her 30’s. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Her birthday is December 25 th.

So back in March of this year Chrystal Gutierrez did an investigation of Anthonette’s case and posted a two-part video on her YouTube channel. This report includes an interview with Anthonette’s little sister Sadie as well as some disturbing imformation that was previously unknown:
-Prior to Anthonette’s disappearance, Emo Gardella and Ron Perry, Penny Cayedito’s best friend would come to the house. He was always there when Penny would have parties at her home.
– The night Anthonette disappeared Emo arrived at Anthonette’s home and gave her two roses and a gift, a necklace. He also put Anthonette on his lap, which made her uncomfortable so Sadie grabbed Anthonette and her, Sadie and Wendy went to Athonette’s room.
– Penny Cayedito told Wendy and Sadie that they had to go to bed while Anthonette got to stay up late and play cards with her, which Sadie said was unusual.
– That night, according to Sadie, she, Wendy and Anthonette slept in their moms room, not in their own rooms as Penny would later claim.
– Ron Perry never came by the house again after Anthonette’s disappearance
– In 1994 Penny was interviewed by the FBI. Sadie went with her mother but waited outside. The FBI interview started with Penny being told that the FBI had information that Penny was involved Penny replied “What if I told you Emo and I did this, would we both go to jail?” She said that she and Emo got together on a plan before Anthonette’s disappearance. Penny told Emo that Anthonette was getting to be a problem and that she wanted a better life for Anthonette. Emo told Penny that he would take Anthonette, but when Penny asked where Emo told her it was better if she didn’t know.
– Penny confirmed that Emo did come to the house the night of Anthonette’s disappearance and gave her two roses and.
Penny told the FBI about a second knock at the door the night Anthonette disappeared. She told Anthonette to answer it, even though ordinarily she told her daughters never to answer the door. Penny laid down for thirty minutes and when she got up she couldn’t find Anthonette. She said she had “second thoughts about Anthonette’s disappearance”
– Penny tried to find Anthonette, but eventually gave up.

I dont buy the sisters recollection years later about the abduction. I don’t think anyone put her up to it, I think its likely just a dream that she’s had that became reality over time. That being said. If the dream were true, that would point to Anthonettes mother being involved or at least knowing more than she let on.
Random kidnappings at night directly from the home are incredibly rare, the only one off the top of my head is Kristen Stewart and it wasn’t truly random since the family knew thr guy. Jon Benet too, but family involvement is suspected there as well.
It’s rare enough I can see why investigators have their doubts about her mom. Unfortunately since there’s nothing else on this case to go off of if you dismiss the little sisters account, we really can’t say anything more. We have no idea if she was kidnapped at home, or if she had wandered off, or was lured out, or her mom was blitzed and brought someone home that took her. She just vanished. Truly random home invasion style kidnappings are incredibly rare though, so I think there’s a very high chance it was someone that knew the family in passing, and knew that her mom would be out of the picture somehow to pull this off.
I cant really see her being alive at this point sadly. Those eye witness accounts months and years after the fact I never put too much weight on. People are wrong, a lot, even about things that they swear are 100% true, much less months and years later. Whoever took her under whatever circumstances probably didn’t have her around long. A lot of DNA testing on Does happening these days, wouldn’t be surprised to see a match to one in the next few years.

So very sad. When Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped, they didn’t know much either. She was gone for years without a trace. Neighbors, who lived around the kidnappers home, called the police for years. They went out and saw nothing. She was under everybody’s nose, but couldn’t be found. This girl may be in such an emotional state, She may only think of survival.
I hate it when people accuse the family when the police have no clue. The same happened with Jonbenet Ramsey. They put that family through hell. Now, they have foreign DNA and no match to it. Even Steven Steiner disappeared for many years.

Ok, I read about this in Wiki. Um never tell the entire story for whatever reason lol I bet Penny failed the polygraph bc she wasnt being truthful about when she came home from the bars and most likely was there when it happened. They/She say she wasnt there when it happened, I think she was. Even as a young girl, I always thought that she brought some ppl home from the bars that night. Probably to get high or to continue drinking. I dont think the baby sister was awake. I think Anthonette being the oldest,was up when her mom came home. I think Penny told the sister to say that Uncle Joe story.. Why him though smh.. Her company did something to that girl. She was up while they were kicking it and they may have started to have sick thoughts immediately; especially doing hard drugs AND drinking..YIKES. They may have even been providing the drugs for Penny too, so who knows how coherent she was. Penny may have not even known her company either. Otherwise, she wouldve told. For some reason, I always thought they did something to her in the home but maybe they just took her then did something to her. I think all of those sightings were false maybe even lies,as usual. I think the sister was told to tell that story and dont think she really saw anything at all until AFTER they started looking for her. I question what time penny said she came home, and what time did she call 911. What time did they say she was asking neighbors and stuff, what time was that? When the drugs wore off and she really realized her baby was gone at 8am? Bars close 3 or 4..

I saw this episode on Pluto earlier today and It stopped me right in my tracks and sooo many memories flooded my 37 yr old mind! Its really hurtful to be reminded of these cases that scared us as children only to learn the case is still unsolved. I sat patiently waiting for an update, and there was none. when the segment ended and went to commercial my heart sank… I have to do more research bc I never knew the mom failed a polygraph let alone purchased a new car. Didnt know they were claiming her to be a drug addict either!! Ive always knew some info was missing bc no child usually wakes in the night and answers a door either out of fear of whats on the other side or fear of their parents scolding them for opening the door. We dont open the door for ANYONE especially back then , even though times are crazy now but we were continuously told not to open doors back then. That is the FIRST and Main clue for me and has always been. She didnt open that door. If mom was on drugs ok, wasnt the dad there as well? I see them both being on drugs and not really tending to the kids. They were probably used to running the house so thats the ONLY way I see any kid opening a door in the middle of the night. She was the oldest so she was like the over seer, the mother. Prob owed some money and they took her. I really cant tell if i feel like she is alive or dead.

I have listened to this case and have heard the audio recording of the phone call to police department. I believe it was Anthonette. She had been missing for a year at that time. She was a smart girl and probably waiting for a moment when she would call her home town. It makes sense that a little girl with an entire year to ponder making a call would likely look up number to call her home town police department knowing her family was looking for her. Calling 911 would seem to a child probably less chance of knowing her identity. The little girl voice seems so authentic. Someone may have known family just enough to know a family member to use as a ploy. It’s a shame police didn’t do more investigating in Albuquerque.

I am the same age as Anthonette, born just some weeks after her in early 1977. So I grew up in the same era, although in a small town in another state. At that time, most towns did not have 911 service. I know that my small town did not. Our parents, teachers, school administrators, etc. drilled the number of the local police station into our heads. All of us kids memorized that number and knew to call it if we were ever in danger or trouble. I didn’t know the local police number for the largest city in our state or even the number for the next town over, but I certainly knew the number for our local police. Our state even today has a low population (less than 1 million people) and only has one area code statewide. Back in those days, you didn’t have to dial the area code to call a local number, just the 3-digit city code and last 4 digits. It sounds like it was the same in New Mexico at that time. So Anthonette would have only needed to dial the city code for Gallup, NM, and then the last 4 digits. I’m guessing she would have had that number memorized as I and the other kids in my small town had our local police number memorized.
I don’t know if the caller was Anthonette or just a prank, but I think the fact she calls the number for local police in her hometown of Gallup, NM, instead of the police number for Albuquerque, NM, instead which is where she claims to be lends more credibility to this being a real call and not a prank call. Of course it’s still possible that it was a prank call, but I’m not sure a prank caller would think of that. Another thing, it also seems more likely to me that Anthonette would call the police in her hometown of Gallup who would be more likely to recognize her name and know she was a missing person, like you said.

I still believe she could be alive and just very brainwashed. I think her mom knew more than what she told the cops. I believe she sold her for drugs and the new car. The family should go on the Dr. Phil show to tell their story and maybe if Anthonette is watching it might give her the strength to come home.

This case is very odd, i think theres more to the story than were being told. I heard the mother was on drugs and also was able to buy a brand new car not too long after she went missing,Why did Wendy wait to say what happened??? How come they were up? Why didnt the mother hear the door? You don’t normally here of this happening were someone picks a random house to knock on the door hoping that a child answers it. I think the mother definitely knew something. Possibly drug related.

I am a medium and I feel so strongly that she is alive and does not want to be found. She just wants to live a simple life under the radar with her uncle, daughter and his wife. She has the support like she would with parents. She was never harmed or in danger. At the time that she was at the restaurant, she was upset with her uncle over an argument and wanted freedom at the moment. Uncle Joe is my dad. My cousin Wendy (who is the youngest of the 3 sisters) stated that the man who she claimed knocked at the door, in the middle of the night, stated he was Uncle Joe. However, my dad was cleared of any involvement and his alibi is rock solid. Whoever used my dad’s name must have known my cousins wouldn’t hesitate to open the door for him because my dad would NEVER hurt them. NEVER.

Family members, friends, people of the community near and far want answers, are hopeful on her where abouts and safe return. i read all these positive and negative comments about my cousin Anthonette; it is really sad how people just judge you without not even knowing any facts or whatever they think they know. i know as a family member to Anthonette ( and how i am related our mothers were sisters ) it hurts everyday knowing she is out there somewhere, wondering if she will come home, we hold on to that hope. My aunt left this world not finding her daughter it really tore her up mentally,physically no one will ever know the pain she felt unless you have been through this type of heartache keep your judgmental comments to yourself. Anthonette was not your average child she had a lot of spunk, she loved Micheal Jackson, did not go a day without listening to her Ronnie milsap songs, she was out going, loved school, and loved learning about God. for those of you that send your kind thoughts and words I say thank you from the bottom of my heart; and those that fuel the negativity in this world well you can take that else where we don’t need it !!! Keep her in your prayers that one day she will finally make it home.

This story interests me a lot but there’s not enough description on the disappearance. For one somebody should look into the one cmnt on here about the girl stating she seen a girl who looks just like her that could be her daughter. Someone should report that. I live in Wisconsin and having many Native American friends mostly Oneida and they have taught me many things. I have never heard of a medicine woman using this crystal ritual being able to contact missing people but I’m going to look into that. Has the family ever contacted the medicine woman prior to see if she has any more info about the girl being alive still or anything? I know that there is a native lady here in my town who does cleansing on your souls and can read everything about and see spirits around if they are loved ones that have passed or lost souls trying to contact you and she tells you if they have a msg for you or what they want. So the family should look into seeing a lady who does stuff like that or native mediums that have those special gifts. As for the cmnt stating she saws her when she a child that could possibly be true. My one native friend had a special gift from when she was about for 4-13 on having contact with spirits. She was 4 when her uncle passed away and her family always told her of how she would be pointing to the ceiling and laughing; talking away with him. She had told them that uncle had visited her and told her to tell her aunt that everything would be okay and not to worry and that he loves and misses her. She described what he looked like and the family was shocked. Ever since she got older she would either come in contact with a spirit but wouldn’t be able to talk to them or she would either hear them and wouldn’t be able to see them. I remember her always being able to talk to her aunt Kelly all the time and seeing her. But like they say babies and animals have the ability to see spirits over most adults especially native babies. Was there any babies in the family or relatives that ever stated seeing anthonette? Did any of the family ever have experiences with hearing or seeing owls before or after her disappearance? I’ve had 10 encounters with owls seeing only one during this past January before my bday. My friend says she thinks I’m a messenger. Because most natives tell me seeing or hearing owls either means to watch out for something, death of a close one is near, or something not always good will occur. I really think the family should look into a native psychic for this case. I pray the girl is found someday and she can be laid to the rest at peace and my condolences go out to the family, I hope you all will be at peace when justice gets served.

The mom was out drinking the night this happened. She could have been passed out, perhaps black out drunk and doesn’t even remember coming home? They keep saying they think she knew more than what she told, maybe this is the reason. NEVER trust a psychic, look at the Cleveland abduction case. A year and a half after Amanda Berry went missing her mom went on the Montel Williams show asking psychic Sylvia Browne for help & she was told by the psychic that her daughter was dead. Her mother gave up hope & died of a broken heart a little over a year later believing her daughter was dead. That whole time Amanda Berry along with 2 others were being chained up & held captive in a house less 3 miles from their home until their escape & rescue in 2013. If Sylvia Browne was so psychic, how come she didn’t know that girl was still alive? Sylvia Browne is proof you can’t trust a psychic. While Amanda was being held captive she watched her mom on the Montel Williams show being told by the so called “pyschic” that she was dead. Her exact words were “she’s not alive, honey” I can only imagine how pissed Amanda must have been when she was watching that.

I don’t believe the sister’s story. I really think she was coaxed into saying that 2 people in a van took her. She didn’t tell the story until several years after. And according to the story. Only after they had a lead as to a possible sighting of Anthonette. THEN she tells this story. Whether she made it up or dreamed it. I dunno. It makes no sense to just go back to bed afterwards. And then help her mom try and find Anthonette the next morning. Why didn’t she tell her mom???? The phone call doesn’t make sense either. From what I have read it was made to the police station. NOT 911. Who just up and knows the number? To the police station? Im 31 and I dont. I think Anthonette’s mom KNEW MORE than she was telling. Apparently so did the investigators in charge of the investigation. They wanted to interview her before she passed away of illness. However they got to the hospital too late. I would like to make a possible leap here. I think the phone call was set up to renew interest in the case. I think the mom knew who possibly might have taken her. And was trying to give the police a tip. Just my theory. I believe she was threatened into NOT saying anything. And feared her daughter was dead. Then possibly someone probably gave her the impression she was alive. Which resulted in the phony phone call to the police station. Too short to trace. But enough to light a fire under the investigation.

Again I thank its a famliy kiddnaping, cause the girl’s were told never to answer the door inless it was a famliy memeber. So look at famliy, an uncle to be exact, cause acoreding to her sister when she answered the door she called the person uncle.
This case still touches me...
I remember seeing this story… I’m a Navajo woman from Arizona and Gallup really isn’t that far from my hometown. I think about it often and wonder what happened to that little girl…. Although she is older than me, I’m 29, I see the last images and think of her as a baby. Oh, my heart goes out to the Cayedito family. I know no matter what anyone says, or does, your hearts must ache. I hope you all heal in some ways and I pray to God that you get answers and that Anthonette is alive and well, or no longer suffering. Peace be with you, Shi Dine’.

I would like to believe that Anthonette Cayadito is still alive? To look at her photo, you see the face of innocence. For someone or more than one individual to take her and hurt her is such pure evil. Maybe one day the truth will be told and those involved will be held accountable for their actions.

Anthonette “Squirrel” Cayedito, is my first cousin and no, she has never been found. April 6, 2015 will be the 29th Anniversary of her disappearance. I wrote this poem a few years ago for her. Cousin, wherever you are, I love you and I pray you are safe.

On a cool April morning, she came up missing – gone, taken away
The search then started
Many came from miles around
To help my hurting family
Search for my cousin who still has not been found
Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her
Her smile and laughter live on in my mind
Living, dancing & singing the memories will never die
Dear Lord you know what happened as everything is part of your plan
It’s just so hard for me to fathom as I struggle to understand
I pray that You will protect her, wherever she may be

Hey Desiree. I’m still troubled by this case. And I’d like to help in any way. Did you ever think about giving your DNA to the federal data bank. I heard theyre working on one in the US to help identify people In murder cases. It would speed up finding her significantly

Would you or your family consider contacting Dr. Phil about this case? It might help because if Antonette is still alive & she happens to watch it then she would know that you are still looking for her, there is a possibility that she may not know she is a missing child. If she is dead, then the person who knows something might be able to locate her remains so she c an b e properly laid to rest & your family might have some type of closure

I was a friend of her sister in school and they never found her,but her mother had a shrine of sorts to celebrate her daughter and you couldn’t touch it at all. Her mother still feels shes alive I think.
