President Joe Biden signed H.R. 3359 on Wednesday, putting the Homicide Victims’ Families’ Rights Act of 2021 into law. Texas Senator John Cornyn co-sponsored the bill in the senate.

The new law requires federal agencies to revisit cold case murders and apply new technologies.

The Austin yogurt shop murders inspired the new law. Over 30 years ago, four teen girls were killed when the yogurt shop was robbed and then set on fire. That case still remains unsolved, so the new law will require federal agencies to look at cold cases with a fresh set of eyes and law enforcement agencies would be required to provide annual reports to congress on cold case reviews.
