It was Dec. 22, 1981, in Valdese, North Carolina, when Rhonda Hinson, 19, got into her car, pulled out of the driveway, and waved to her parents as she drove off to her company Christmas party. That was the last time Bobby and Judy Hinson saw their daughter alive.

Rhonda Hinson was killed around 1 a.m. on Dec. 23, 1981. According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, someone shot into the back of her 1981 Datsun as she was driving on Mineral Springs Mountain Road near the I-40 bridge.

The shooter and the weapon were never found. A reward for information that leads to an arrest has was increased to $94,700 in December 2024. Rhonda Hinson’s mother said the reward money doesn’t matter.

“Money is not going to get them to talk,” Judy said. “No matter how much it is, I don’t think anybody’s coming for it.
