Nearly 25 years after a brutal homicide stunned an Opelika neighborhood, investigators are renewing their plea to the public for help solving the murder of 75-year-old Mary Elece Rice Rearden. The State of Alabama is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

On Labor Day, Monday, September 4, 2000, Rearden’s daughter, Charlotte, made a horrifying discovery at her mother’s home in the 200 block of 2nd Avenue. Charlotte had become concerned after being unable to reach Mary by phone and decided to stop by the house. She found her mother’s body in the hallway, surrounded by a large amount of blood.
