On April 15, 2017, Humboldt State University Sophomore David Lawson was fatally stabbed to death at a house party in Arcata. The Arcata Police Department is still actively investigating the case to this day.

“The first police responders to the scene of the murder of D.J. Lawson, were not trained at all in terms of crime scene preservation or homicide investigation and they really didn’t follow the procedures that should have been followed to preserve possible evidence to line up witnesses that were present at the time and that was the main problem,” said retired special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Thomas Parker.

Despite the presence of DNA evidence linking both Lawson and Kyle Zoellner, no arrests have been made in connection to the homicide in the seven years since.
