On the night of February 1, 1991, a widowed mother of three was hard at work manning the drive-thru at Hardee’s in Franklin.

It also happened to be 49-year-old Peggy Cox’s birthday. However, as the last customer pulled through the drive-thru around 11:45 p.m. that night, a tragedy that has haunted the community for decades unfolded.

A male voice was heard placing an order over the intercom. Only a couple of seconds passed before Cox’s son, Jude, who was a cook at the fast-food restaurant, heard several gunshots and saw his mother fall to the ground.
