CASE DETAILS

An air duct was used in escape

Alcatraz was among the most dreaded prisons in America, a fortress perched on a rocky Island in San Francisco Bay. The ice-cold, treacherous water of the bay was the best guarantee that nobody would successfully escape. And nobody did…until June 11, 1962.

That night, three men broke out of their cell house and vanished into the bay in a homemade raft. Frank Morris, the brilliant mastermind of the escape, as well as John Anglin and his brother Clarence were never seen again.

Authorities later discovered pieces of the raft. It had broken up at sea. The three convicts appeared to have swum for it. Did they make it? The debate continues.

Philip Bergen, Captain of the Guards at Alcatraz from 1946 to 1955, believes survival was impossible:

“If they went into the water they were drowned within thirty minutes. They succumbed to hypothermia and drowned.”

A police officer searches the water through binoculars, there is a coast guard boat in the background.

The prisoners were never found

But Patrick Mahoney, who ran the launch that traveled between Alcatraz and the mainland, has some doubts:

“I felt that they didn’t make it, but I thought we’d find a body. We didn’t find a body.”

In the many years that have passed since that June night in 1962, no one has reported seeing Frank Morris, John Anglin, or Clarence Anglin. They may have beaten the odds, and survived their escape from Alcatraz.

Don DeNevi, a Professor at Merritt College in Oakland, co-wrote a manuscript about the escape with Clarence Carnes, an Alcatraz inmate. Carnes arrived on the Rock when he was just eighteen years old and spent close to 20 years there. He was a close confidante of the three convicts who escaped. Don DeNevi put it this way:

“Carnes was the most important inmate on Alcatraz. He had gained the respect of virtually all the other inmates, because he knew how to keep his mouth shut. He was, in a sense, the godfather of Alcatraz.”

Carnes told DeNevi that the plot to escape began with an inmate named Allen West, who was assigned to paint the top tier and ceiling of the cellblock.

A dummy tucked into the blankets of a jail bed.

A dummy was used to fool guards

While working there, West discovered that with some hard work, he could probably get to the prison roof through the ceiling ventilation shaft.

The ventilation duct was constructed with crossbars inside. It was impossible to cut the bars or to squeeze past them. But West saw that if he cut the entire duct from its surrounding support and shoved the whole thing out, he could easily get to the roof.

West enlisted the help of John and Clarence Anglin, both convicted bank robbers, who had a history of escapes from other institutions. According to DeNevi, the Anglin brothers had some other useful skills:

“The Anglins were expert raftsmen because they’ve grown up in the Florida swamps. They knew how to construct rafts, they knew how to negotiate currents, and they were expert swimmers as well.”

The central figure in the plot was an inmate named Frank Morris. The former Captain of the Guards at Alcatraz, Philip Bergen, described him with some respect:

“He was the thinker. Anything connected with this escape, that had any real brains behind it, can be credited to Morris.”

Carnes had told Morris about a utility corridor that ran the length and the height of the cellblock. Heating and water pipes inside the corridor formed a makeshift ladder to the ventilation shaft. Morris believed that he and the others could dig through their cell walls to this hidden corridor during “music hour.” Bergen recalls this part of the daily routine on Alcatraz and explains how the escapees exploited it:

“In the early part of the evening, there was what they called a “music hour.” And anybody who had a string instrument could play. When that music is playing, it has an effect of deafening the officer who is making his inspections. The inmates that were digging were uh, just digging away.”

The Anglins, West, and Morris each carved a hole in the rear wall of their respective cells. West also used the time to craft false ventilation fronts to hide their work.

The convicts devised another brilliant ploy so that they wouldn’t be missed during head counts. Don Eberle, who headed the FBI investigation into the escape, described the ingenious deception:

“They decided that they would have to make dummy heads to be in their bunks, in case one of them was not in there when the guard would go by. This was at a time when the lights were turned low, and it would be difficult to recognize other than a face was in the bed.”

Inmate Leon “Whitey” Thompson was one of the many prisoners who helped the escapees:

“Morris asked me about how you mix flesh tone, ‘cause you see, I am an artist, I did, I did a lot of oil painting on Alcatraz. I begin to wonder, why is he so interested in flesh tone and then I begin to put it all together because uh, they needed a flesh tone color for the dummy heads.”

The dummies were made from soap, concrete powder, and stolen paint. One of the Anglins worked in the barbershop and swiped some hair to paste on the dummies’ heads for an extra touch of realism.

For eight months, Morris and the Anglin brothers left their cells at night to drill out the ventilation shaft and collect the items they needed for their escape. Clarence Carnes, who saw a lot during his 18 years on the Rock, was impressed by their effort:

In his manuscript, Clarence Carnes wrote, “… many times through the years I‘d met men who had tried to escape. But their flaw had been too little planning and being too hasty. They had not been thorough in their thinking, and that’s what defeated them. But not this time.”

For the guards on patrol during the Spring of 1962, the countdowns, the routines, the boredom, were no different than any other time. But many inmates knew differently. During the days, right under the gaze of their keepers, they helped the four escapees in their preparations. One of their most important jobs was secretly passing them raincoats.

Working in their cells at night, the four prisoners used the raincoats to make life preservers, which they then stashed in the escape tunnels. In a secret workspace, hidden by blankets, the Anglins and Morris took turns assembling a raft, also out of the pilfered raincoats.

The time to escape finally arrived.

Quietly, the prisoners left their cells for the last time. Immediately, they encountered their first problem…Allen West was unable to slip through the hole in his cell wall. The others were unwilling to wait. Allen West, the original instigator of the plan, was left behind.

Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers safely slipped their cells into the utility corridor. There, they climbed up the heating pipes to the ceiling, popped out the ventilation ducts they’d cut from the ceiling during the past eight months and made their way to the roof. Still undetected, they ran across the roof, and climbed down outside the prison. They headed toward the water.

One of the many challenges the escapees faced was how to inflate their huge raft. Frank Morris had come up with an ingenious idea. He had received a small accordion known as a concertina, for use during the daily music hour. Don Eberle, the FBI investigator, described how the instrument was used during the escape:

“They had taken the keys out of the concertina, and therefore you could put your hand on one strap of the concertina and push it up and down, it would operate just like a bellows.”

Ever so slowly, the raft began to fill. When it was ready, the three men pushed it into the water at the edge of Alcatraz and climbed on. Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin had made it off the Rock.

Inside the prison, the dummy heads the prisoners had left behind in their cells fooled any guards that happened to look in. When the breakout was finally discovered, it triggered an extensive search, one of the largest manhunts ever. Patrick Mahoney, a former guard at Alcatraz, was among those who took part in the search:

“We were ordered to go out on the bay and of course, start looking around the island. And then over at Angel Island, scanning the beaches to see if anything that pertained to them might have washed up. It became evident that we weren’t going to find them. Whether they had made it or not, no one knew for sure.”

During the first 24 hours, the search teams came up empty-handed. Then, they began to find remnants of the escapees’ raft. In addition, a homemade oar was discovered floating between Alcatraz and Angel Island. This paddle matched one that the convicts had left behind in the cellblock.

Two days after the breakout, a rubber wrapped packet was also discovered floating near Angel Island. It contained an address book, 80 family photographs, and a money order that belonged to one of the escapees. Some, such as FBI investigator Don Eberle, began to doubt that the escapees had survived:

“Probably the earliest they could have gotten into the water would be 10:30. The outgoing tide started that night at ten o’clock. And that outgoing tide is very strong. And I firmly believe that they were taken by the currents into the Pacific Ocean.”

In addition, a Norwegian ship spotted a body floating 20 miles past the Golden Gate bridge on the day of the escape. Though unable to retrieve it, their description of it matched that of Frank Morris.

However, there is also some compelling evidence to suggest that at least one of the men survived. The day after the escape, a man claiming to be John Anglin called a San Francisco law firm known to represent Alcatraz inmates. Eugenia MacGowan was an attorney at the law firm. She took the call:

“And he said, ‘I’m John Anglin. And I want you to contact the U.S. Marshall’s office.’ I said, ‘Well I’m not going to do that unless I know why.’ And he said, ‘Do you know who I am?’ And I said, ‘No’. He said, ‘Read the newspaper and he hung up.’”

Alcatraz inmate Clarence Carnes claimed that a few weeks after the break, he received a post card from the escapees. In it, they gave the pre-arranged code words that confirmed their escape. The card read, “Gone fishing.”

Carnes believed that Morris and the Anglin brothers had help from the outside, arranged by a convict on the inside. He claimed that Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, the underworld king of Harlem, had arranged for a boat to pick up the escapees. According to Carnes, the boat then took the convicts to Pier 13 in San Francisco’s Hunter’s Point district. Philip Bergen, the former Alcatraz Captain of Guards, doubts the story:

“My feeling is that’s just something that Carnes dreamed up and that there is not the slightest possibility there’s any truth in it.”

Allen West was interrogated repeatedly about Bumpy Johnson. He was also pressed to reveal any other contacts who might have helped the convicts. He denied that any existed. Fellow Alcatraz inmate Leon “Whitey” Thompson put it this way:

“West wouldn’t have copped out. West was people. He was solid people. To this day I don’t believe he ever told ‘em nothing.

The stories told by prisoners at Alcatraz did not impress the FBI investigators like Philip Bergen. He still believes that the men drowned within minutes of hitting the water:

“Now, of course, we never are cocksure enough to say, well, we know they’re dead, but we’re pretty sure that they’re dead, because there was no trace of them whatsoever. However, they’re still on the ‘missing’ list and not the ‘dead’ list.

Even though Alcatraz ceased prison operations many years ago, the infamous escape of June 1962, continues to puzzle investigators. In fact, over the years, thousands of leads have been investigated, but to no avail. Will this legendary case ever be solved? For now, the arrest warrants for the three fugitives remain active, and the search for answers goes on.

I saw a recent Alcatraz show and they had an FBI specialist compare a photo of the brothers from years later that they supposedly sent to the family in the 70’s saying they were alive. The FBI compared facial areas from the mugshots to the new photo and said he was 98% positive it was a match. He compared jawlines, bone structures, etc. Pretty fascinating.

Great episode, especially looking back over the history of Alcatraz and prior escape attempts. In regards to the escape attempt in December 1937 involving Theodore Cole and Ralph Roe. Like Morris and The Anglin’s, Cole and Roe’s attempt succeeded.

I have a theory that Ralph Roe may be the man who was found dead at Somerton Beach on December 1, 1948 in Adelaide in Australia. Firstly, it based on the photographs. While not completely identical, there are similarities in appearance between Roe & The Somerton Man. Also, there are other things to consider.

*The man was found dead near the beach. Alcatraz is surrounded by water. What an odd choice to be found dead in!

    * The man had no identification on him at all. All labels on his clothing was removed and it seemed that the man himself or maybe someone else had gone to great lengths to make identification impossible. If Roe was The Somerton Man, he resorted to this because he went to great lengths to avoid getting caught.

    * There were theories before that The Somerton Man was an American. Someone claimed that The Somerton Man had American relatives and could have been related to Thomas Jefferson. Plus, when they found him, he was wearing a suit that was most likely manufactured in America. Plus, The Somerton Man had American chewing gum and other American items in his possession. Police were of the belief that the man was not Australian. If Roe was The Somerton Man, he could have come to Australia either as a Soldier during WWII or perhaps after WWII.

In 1948, the year that The Somerton Man was found, the Warden of Alcatraz resigned and was replaced.

Last year, an academic identified The Somerton Man as Carl Webb from Footscay. But this is disputed by some and Police and the coroner to this day have not officially declared Webb or anyone else to be The Somerton Man.

One thing I haven’t seen discussed is how goddam motivating being a prisoner looking at possibility of freedom IF you push yourself hard enough.

Mexico was actually in good relations with the United States back then. If they were to escape in another country it would probably be in the Domican Republic. Close enough to Georgia if they did want to visit relatives. Far enough to avoid extradition.

I think I know what happened to the three escaped. My theory is that there was a boat lying in wait and when the convicts jumped into the waters, the boat lying in wait picked them up and escaped, fled to Brazil.

Hello everyone. My name is Houdenny…look it up. I’m now 61 and I have swum the Alcatraz waters. Yes they are cold but in June they are quite manageable. I’ve done it!
I’ve been an escape artist for nearly 50 years. In fact, my name was given to me by my mother at a very young age after legendary Harry Houdini. Again , look up Houdenny.
These 3 convicts made it. All the hoopla your hear is cover up ego from authorities because they are embarrassed to admit this was in fact a successful escape. PLEASE USE YOUR COMMON SENSE PEOPLE AND LOGIC. Remember, media and authorities are very dangerous and also quite ignorant.
It was a good escape. Perhaps the very best under its circumstances.

    hey, i have a theory,
i have visited Alcatraz 3 times, and visited Frank Morris’s cell quite a few times, and Frank used a dummy to escape, so I dont think the guards killed him, nor do I believe he’s alive. I believe that he died swimming back to San Fran. The water temperature is really, really cold, and swimming for that long in that water is way more than enough to give a middle-age man hypothermia. please, look into it. i believe it’s a plausible theory.

The Norwiegian freighter I believe is the ship that actually got the 3 out of the USA & off to wherever it took them. I believe Golden and or Breck planned this for the 3 escapees. Golden being either the Master of this ship or the 2nd or 3td Mate..(?).. The body floating in the water… I believe is that of a homeless man that use to some times stay at the shack on the beach where a murder took place later on in 1963. Assumed to be the killings of the Zodiac killer. I believe Golden was the Zodiac killer or 1 of them any way… this was his warped mind on how to throw the cops off for the 3 that escaped Alcatraz. Since he was a homeless man, he figured no one would miss the guy…. In his mind,
“Brilliant plan”..!! Probably not so much to whomever had to throw the body over board on that freighter…lol… Pieces are starting to fit more and more with these cold cases… Hey Clarice Woodward… how’s my Dads property on the Bluffs in good old P.A. ..? Or is it Crash..? You go by both names I get it… “Timmy”

Since somebody mentioned DB Cooper, the most likely suspect in that case is Kenny Christensen, and as far as the Alcatraz escape, there was a skull found in the bay a few years back but was confirmed not to be either of the Anglin brothers (their relatives were searching for them) but could’ve been Morris’s.

Frank Morris was insanely smart he was in the top 3% IQ in America apparently. They obviously got away. There had been 14 escape attempts from Alcatraz before the Anglins and Frank Morris escaped and they always recaptured the inmates or found them dead in the water. To not find any body out of 3 men says it all. They made it ( greatest escape of all time). Also there was a car stolen that night and a man reported being nearly run down by 3 men in a car all wearing blue shirts looking like they were in a hurry.

Bascially, in the past two decades some major substantiated evidence has come to light.

When the case was transferred from the FBI to the US Marshals (which I believe is standard protocol after a certain amount of time) all the files were examined in detail.

While the FBI never made it public, there’s 2 records stating that a RAFT WAS FOUND on Angel Island the next day, along with footprints leading away from the raft.

The general reports of no stolen cars in the area that night (it was stated by Allan West, the prisoner in on the escape attempt but couldn’t make it out of his cell on the night, that the three had planned to steal a car) are wrong. a 1955 blue Chevrolet was reported stolen, and it another possible piece of evidence, a motorist in Stockton, California (80 miles East of San Francisco) reported being forced off the road by three men in a blue Chevrolet driving at high speed)

Good old Sam thinks he’s got it all figured out now.. Here’s my theory on all this… Another cold case from the San Francisco area is related to the Alcatraz case. That being the Zodiac killer cold case. Zodiac was the master behind the Alcatraz escape. A perfect fit for him to pull off that being a Merchant marine Captain w/an I.Q. of 163, mathematical genius, dumbass! It’s one thing to be a genius but to kill another human being is just plain stupid no matter what- Zodiac also had a severe medical condition caused from being a guinea pig for the CIA & liking the drugs being tested. Eventually a tumor formed on his Amygdala part of his brain causing his rage and anger to explode uncontrollably. The Manchurian candidate so to speak. A programmed assassin. Zodiac was normal during the day , well, as much as he could be any way… Zodiac meets Darlene Ferrin. Got her pregnant right off the bat~! In Zodiacs mind that just could not happen. Being a Merchant marine Captain and a pretty prominent figure in society, he just couldn’t have it- Add here when Zodiac was 5 years old his Mother accidentally kills herself by coat hanger abortion. She bled out and dies right in front of Zodiac. That would devastate any 5 year old- When Darlene started to show with her pregnancy is when Zodiac takes Darlene to the Virgin Islands. In Darlene’s 9th month she knows she needs to find a midwife or a nurse to deliver her baby. She calls a friend of hers that being Donna Lass knowing that Donna went to nursing school. However, Donna turns her down feeling she just wasn’t quite ready to do it yet. Donna offers to call a friend of hers whom was in her last year of nursing school, Cheri Jo Bates. Both agree to do it. This is when Zodiac flies both to the Virgin Islands. Paul Stone the taxi driver is the one taking them to the airport. Zodiac is not liking this what~so~ever~! Darlene and Zodiac both knew they couldn’t keep this baby. Darlene because she was still in school and not wanting her parents or her friends to know. Zodiac because well, he was the Zodiac Killer-!! & This next part is where it gets kinda shady and crazy… Zodiac calls his younger Brother up, his Brother works for the O.S.S. and a pretty crooked child molester and gangster character. Not a nice man- Zodiac tells him whats going on w/the new baby, blah, blah and needs help. His Brother just having a new baby with his new Wife, his Wife having post pardum depression going on, gets talked in to going to a faked doctor whom slips her LDS & shows her a film over and over and over again of a woman having a breach birth. She’s shown this until she thinks she’s actually. giving birth and this is when the baby is slipped with her. What a perfect plan don’t you think..— My God~~~ Zodiac going back and knows theres loose ends to cut and get rid of… Darlene and Zodiac stay together in their secret relationship for a bit longer until one night Darlene decides to follow Zodiac. Zodiac not knowing she was following him goes to a college and parks. Darlene is in the shadows and watching. Zodiac gets out of his car walks up to a V.W. opens the back and disconnects the battery cables. Next he’s talking to a woman then kills her by nearly decapitating her– This scared Darlene to death. She packs her things and leaves him. Zodiac being a shipping Captain has to leave for a year on a job. Tried to find Darlene wanting to know what was going on..? He can’t find her any where. Leaves. Comes back to find Darlene got married and had another baby. Already spilt up from her new husband already and has a new job at the pancake house. Zodiac is some where and see’s a woman that looks alot like Darlene get in to a cr with a man and they drive off. Zodiac follows them to where they parked and kills the both of them. Walks over to girls body and see’s it’s not Darlene. Mistaken identity~! Zodiac still on a mission to find Darlene goes to the pancake house see’s Darlene and they get in to a heated argument. Zodiac leaves. Next day Zodiac is at Mare island at the ship yard. a 4th of July celebration is going on Zodiac see’s Darlene there w/her Sister Christine giving away buttons, selling them whatever… Waits for Darlene to leave and follows her. Darlene is having a painting party at her house. She leaves shortly after she gets there and drives to ick up a friend of hers, Mike Mageau. They go to the park to get high and talk. Zodiac follows. Zodiac pulls up behind them gets out and kills Darlene & seriously injuring Magoo. Zodiac still having more loose ties to be cut those being Paul Stone the ab driver and also Donna Lass. BANG! Done deal. After this Zodiac gets very sick. Knowing just how sick he was he decides to see his Daughter that he gave away years ago. Zodiac at the end of his killing spree told the cops he was no longer going to tell them about his killings. He said he would make them all look like accidents or SUICIDES from that point on. A day and a half before Zodiac goes to see his Daughter whom lives 2 states away, his Daughter’s stepdad committed supposed suicide. Hmmmmm…??? Zodiac was a master at reading tides and knowing just when they came in and out of the S.F. Bay. A boat was waiting in the Bay to pick up the 3 that escaped Alcatraz. He was bored and knew he was the perfect person to do it.- I also think he did the escape years prior of the 2 that escaped from Alcatraz prison in the 1940’s. I’m sure there’s so much more to all this but here’s my theory any way.

The body that was seen floating in the bay by the Norwegian ship was believed to have came ashore at Point Reyes a week or so later. They examined the bones at this time and the proposed height of the person was an exact match to Frank Morris. (5′-7″)

In 2011, this body was exhumed and DNA evidence was obtained. The US Marshals were able to find a living relative of Frank Morris and compared the DNA. It was not a match. In 2015, DNA was obtained from the Anglin family and it was also not a match.

That same year, the Anglin brothers’ family revealed evidence, including Christmas cards allegedly sent by the brothers for three years after their escape. While the handwriting on the cards was verified as the Anglins’, none contained a postmarked stamp, so experts could not determine when they were mailed. The family cited a story from family friend Fred Brizzi, who grew up with the brothers and claimed to have recognized them in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1975. They produced photographs, taken by Brizzi, of two men resembling John and Clarence Anglin, and the farm near Rio where they were purportedly living. (Brizzi died in 1993). Forensic experts hired by the History Channel confirmed that the photos were taken in 1975, and asserted that the two men were “more than likely” the Anglins.

On October 12, 2015, interest in the case was renewed when History Channel premiered a documentary about the 1962 escape, focusing on John and Clarence Anglin and the possibility that their escape was successful. Evidence produced by relatives including photos and Christmas cards seem to suggest the Anglins might have escaped to Brazil. No evidence has been produced to disclose the whereabouts of Frank Morris.

Oct 11, 2015, New Evidence: Alcatraz Escapees Didn’t Die

(Newser) – Three inmates who famously escaped from Alcatraz prison in 1962 may not be so dead after all. In fact, new evidence that they survived has spawned a History Channel special and inspired a retired US marshal to revive the investigation, the New York Post reports. “This is absolutely the best actionable lead we’ve had,” says the ex-marshal, Art Roderick. To recap, three Alcatraz inmates—Frank Morris along with brothers John and Clarence Anglin—escaped by chiseling a hole into a prison wall and jumping into the cold San Francisco Bay, with homemade paddles and a raft made from raincoats. Never found, they were presumed dead. But two nephews of the Anglins have produced evidence to the contrary:

    • They have Christmas cards signed in the names of John and Clarence Anglin, and Roderick matched the handwriting. But the cards are neither stamped nor dated.
    • A photo that will be seen on the show, Alcatraz: Search for the Truth, “proves the Anglins may have been alive in the 1970s,” says the Post.
    • And DNA from the dug-up remains of Anglin brother Alfred does not genetically match a set of bones found on the shore near San Francisco in 1963.
    • In a letter, former Boston mobster Whitey Bulger says he met the three men in Alcatraz and gave them advice about navigating currents in the bay. “He taught them that when you disappear, you have to cut all ties,” says one of the nephews, Ken Widner. “He told me, ‘These brothers undoubtedly had done exactly what I told them to do.'”

I think I met these people in NJ, around 1997, when I worked at a Mc Donalds. They would come in everyday and one of them would always be smoking Pall Mall cigarettes. He was always talking about selling cars,at used car lot, and the other brothers were always together,as they got older I would see them with their wives at the supermarket, driving around all the time in a white mini-van. All of a sudden one brother caught Parkinsons disease and died in about 2 months.I think the smoker died ,too, because he had dozens of liver spots on his arms. The other brother was really upset because his brother died and moved to Florida. It seemed very sad because they were so nice, sometimes wathing people get old can be very wierd.

they got away. the cops know it but of course don’t want to admit it. there is one HUGE piece of evidence that is routinely ignored: the white boat. an unnamed person (I wish I could find out who and where and all that but the info is secret, apparently) made a deathbed confession that he was in on picking them up out of the water, in a white boat. now, that’s just one person’s story, could be totally making it up…except a cop on duty saw the white boat that night in the bay, saw it acting strangely, but didn’t do anything, although he included the info in his report. but since it was ACTUAL evidence that was inconvenient for the FBI, they basically buried that info. here is the web site: http://abc7news.com/news/i-team-exclusive-new-leads-in-alcatraz-escapees-manhunt/1349024/

and here is some of the info from that site:

“Robert Checchi was an off-duty San Francisco Policeman sitting in his car just before midnight at Marina Green that evening.

He was gazing out at the Bay when he noticed what he calls a “pristine white boat.” Checchi says he immediately felt like something was wrong because the boat had no lights on. He didn’t see anybody on the boat and he couldn’t hear any noise coming from the boat.

But after watching the boat intently for several minutes, Checchi said a light went on. He says somebody on the boat was shining a spotlight or a flashlight into the dark waters of the Bay. He told ABC7’s I-Team it just didn’t look right.

“I said this is really unusual,” Checchi said.

He said, “It started moving out and the port and starboard lights came on. I couldn’t tell whether it went north or south, it just disappeared into the dark.”

The next day, when Checchi found out there had been an escape from Alcatraz, he went in to work and filed a report about what he had seen. The FBI questioned Checchi for days and days and sometimes the interrogations got somewhat nasty.

Checchi has never told his story on television before but he explained to ABC7 Investigative Reporter Dan Noyes how the FBI agents asked him over and over again, “what did you see; where was it; what time was it” and even “How come you didn’t swim out to check the boat out.”

Checchi recalls one FBI agent said to him, “Like hey, let’s make this go away. Let’s bury it.”

so basically it’s another case of “well, we can follow up on this evidence, in which case we’d have to do real WORK and that’s HARD, plus everyone will know they escaped and we’ll look like idiots, or we can just bury it and CLAIM they all died.”

I must confess that some people on here have the wrong idea about us. We were a whole lot smarter than people gave us credit for being. There was a supply boat tied to the doc at Alcatraz the night we escaped. We put the raft an some items into the water, shoved it off and then walked to the supply boat where we hid. The Anglins hid in supply lockers and I hid in a space below the engine copartment. We waited until the next day when the supply boat returned to San Francisco and after the boat was vacated we simply walked away. The raincoat raft, the life prservers and some personal stuff was all a smoke screen. I am an old man now an this story needs to be told. Take it or leave it.

The progame made an error on when the body was allegedly seen by the freighter. It was actually on July 17, not June 12. Also, I have doubts as to whatever it happened.

Let read what was said: “It was reported on July 17th, 1962 that a Norwegian Freighter had seen a body floating 20-miles northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge. The crew claimed to have seen the body in July, although they did not report the sighting until October. Coroners in the area confirmed that a body could float for five weeks after drowning. The body was reported to have been badly decomposed, and could not be identified. It was determined that the body was clothed in full-length denim trousers, identical to prison issue uniforms. The FBI determined this sighting to be one of the most significant leads in the case.”

There are too many holes in this bit of information that persuade me to believe that it can’t be used as a significant lead in the case. First, and most importantly, the ship failed to report the sighting until October, even though the escape by Morris and the Anglins garnered a great deal of attention, and any lead, specifically one that occurred less than a month from the night of the escape, would have been highly valuable and important information to relay to the FBI, also considering the sighting happened a short distance from a U.S. penitentiary and in U.S. waters.

Secondly, the FBI presumed these three men to be dead only hours after they were discovered missing, without having any significant factual evidence to suggest they had drowned. For the FBI to suggest that a body floating in the water, which wasn’t reported to them for four months, to be wearing a prison issue uniform is a bit questionable. Since the sighting had not been reported until October, the body was long gone, and the FBI had never seen it. Any information given by the FBI regarding the appearance of the body should immediately be called into question, considering that they never had the body present to identify, and had only second-hand information on a sighting that was reported four months too late. The body may have been wearing clothing similar to a prison issue uniform, and then again, may not have. The holes in this report suggest that it was nothing more than fabrication on the part of the FBI. There is no factual evidence to support their claim.

Frank had the brains but not the aquamechanics. There was so much involved with this escape. That water was numbing and they split up in the dark current. I believe one of the Anglin brothers made it to shore. And later passed away in South America. Norwegian cruise passengers informed authorities that they discovered a body floating in the ocean who sadly appeared to be Frank. I want these three to come out and make record headlines but it’s too late now. This will remain a great story forever.

Yeah I think that it is very possible that the suspects escaped prison and lived on. I believe that the body that was found in the bay 20 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge, was probably a suicide since there have been quite a few that have never been recovered, and some that haven’t even been confirmed.

I have been researching this escape for quite some time now. There is no doubt in my mind that the three prisoners survived and made it to wherever they planned to go. For three guys who worked on this plan for 18 months, and all of the effort to throw off the guards in the prison, to come to the conclusion that they had drowned based on the finding of personal effects sounds silly. I believe the items found in the Bay and on Angel Island were deliberately left behind to make it appear the three men had drowned. Sure enough, the authorities concluded they had drowned and scaled back the efforts to find them. The U.S. Marshal Service picked up the case from the FBI in 1979, and still to this day follow up on credible leads regarding Morris and the Anglins.

I firmly believe that Morris and the Anglin Brothers had help from at least one person on the outside, if not more. A man claiming to be a relative of Morris recently, (2012ish) said he gave money to a guard at Alcatraz on behalf of Morris. Whether that claim is true or not, an elderly man has nothing to gain (or lose, really) from coming forward and claiming he helped Morris and the Anglins with their escape efforts. It’s also a known fact that other prisoners knew that Morris and the Anglins had planned to escape and assisted in the efforts by donating raincoats and anything else the potential escapees may need. Those prisoners wanted to see them make it.

Morris and the Anglins carefully planned this escape over a long period of time. They were quite careful with many details in order to maximize the amount of time they had to move before anybody at the prison caught on to their plan. To just freestyle it once they crossed the Bay (whichever way they were going), would be contradictory of what is known about Morris and the Anglins.

All in all, they successfully escaped from The Rock. If they lived, they did so as free men. If they drowned, then they died as free men.

The simplest way to solve this case, and the DB Cooper case, is to publicly offer them immunity to prosecution.
If they’re alive they can come forward and give details on their escape. If they’ve passed on, then perhaps some family member or friend can supply details as to what happened.
